Rhynoplasty

Rhynoplasty, cosmetic nose surgery, is designed to reshape the nose. This surgery can reduce or increase the size of your nose and change the shape of the tip. Surgery will give you a smaller, narrower, more graceful nose and correct obvious problems like a hump. The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people, who are looking for improvement in the way they look, not perfection. If you have realistic expectations, you may be a good candidate. I use septorhinoplasty if the septum (partition) inside the nose also needs correction to improve breathing.

Cosmetic nose surgery is permanent. The final shape that results from this surgery is expected to last a lifetime and re-growth of bumps and deformities corrected by the operation is a rare occurrence.

We can perform rhinoplasty as soon as a person's nose is fully-grown. For girls, this is after age 16, for boys, after age 18.

Nearly all rhinoplasty operations are done as outpatient surgeries. This type of surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and the preferences of the surgeon and patient.

Cosmetic nose surgery usually takes 2 hours to complete. Cosmetic nose surgery plus septal surgery may take one half hour more.

Most or all of the incisions in rhinoplasty are hidden inside of the nostril. External incisions are hidden in the creases where the nose meets the cheek and can be used to narrow the nose. Depending on nose features, I either perform a closed rhinoplasty from within the nose, making the incision inside the nostrils or perform an "open " procedure, especially in more complicated cases, making a small incision across the columela, the vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils. When the surgery is complete, a splint is applied to help the nose maintain its new shape. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints may also be placed in nostrils to stabilise the septum (the dividing wall between the air passages).

Immediately following surgery, you can breathe only through your mouth. Your nose is closed from swelling, surgical packing or both. Your eyes will be puffy or even bruised for up to one week after surgery. Your nose will be swollen, noticeably for 1 to 2 weeks. A little bleeding is common during the first days following surgery, and you may continue to feel some stuffiness for several weeks. Do not blow your nose for a week or so, while the tissues heal. The nasal packing will be removed after a few days and you'll feel much more comfortable. By the end of one or, occasionally, two weeks, all dressings, splints, and stitches should be removed.

Nearly all rhinoplasty patients are able to return to work in one week. The rest will need 10 days to 2 weeks to recover. Avoid all sports for 6 weeks, and no ball sports for 6 months. Avoid strenuous activity (jogging, swimming, bending, sexual relations, any activity that increases your blood pressure) for two to three weeks. Avoid lifting or rubbing your nose, or getting it sunburned, for eight weeks.

Rhinoplasty is a very common operation. Day by day, your nose will begin to look better and your spirits will improve. The most dramatic change will be in your profile. The evolution from a hump to a nice profile helps to keep you happy while you wait for the selling to go down. Most people find recovery from nose surgery to be surprisingly easy. In fact, in some circles, having a "nose job" is considered a status symbol.

Potential complications include bleeding and infection. The risk of bleeding can be lessened if you follow our recommendations. Infection is rare after any nose surgery. Your nose tip will be numb for months because the nerves to the tip of your nose are bruised and cut during surgery.
